Yusuf Barika-Bodunrin is a third year Electrical/Electronics Engineering student at the University of Lagos who is passionate about applying technology to solve real world problems. He has a great interest in Machine Learning and how it can improve energy and power systems. He recently applied his skills to build LossGuard, a model that helps our Distribution Companies (DisCos) detect electricity theft.Â
Beyond the classroom, he is a dedicated leader and active volunteer. He is a scholar of The Bridge Program 2025 (a highly competitive leadership program with a 5% acceptance rate, organized by The Afara Initiative). He is also a fellow of the Kectil Leadership Program 2026. He is currently serving as the Academic Team Lead at Quality Education for All Initiative (QEFAI), and the Assistant Director of Studies at the Engineering Muslim Students Society (EMSS), UNILAG branch. In December 2025, he was nominated for a student exchange program at Bahçesehir University in Turkey for the 2025/2026 spring semester.Â
Yusuf’s journey has been significantly supported by the Funmike Empowerment Foundation. Receiving this scholarship in March 2025 was actually a turning point that eased the financial burden on his single mother, allowing him to focus more on his education without thinking of his next meal. An active member of student bodies like IEEE, SPE, and GDGOC, he is currently open to internships and collaborations in Machine Learning Engineering and Research.
